Composting of municipal solid waste is a simple but scientific decomposition process wherein organic matter stabilizes under aerobic conditions. This decomposed material is repeatedly screened in sieves of different sizes to obtain particle sized good quality compost.

The stages in composting:

  1. Sanitization: To accelerate the digestion process, this fresh garbage is sprayed with certain bacteria. Water is also sprayed on this heap. After 2 days, this garbage is stacked in the form of Windrow on the Compost Pad, which is so designed to prevent percolation of leachate under ground.

  2. Decomposition: The process is completed in 2-3 weeks. Windrow turning, in each week is mandatory.

  3. Coarse Segregation: Comprises of robust Conveyor belts, specially designed to carry heavy, irregular shaped loads, trammels with rotary sieves of suitable sizes, a hydraulic power pack of suitable capacity and certain other accessories.

  4. Preparatory: The digested garbage in the Rain Shed is fed to the hopper attached to the Conveyor, which carries the garbage to the trammel.

  5. Curing: The microbial population and species diversity in the digested compost increases manifold during this stage.

  6. Refinement: it is the final stage of waste processing.

The manure so derived acts as a soil conditioner by improving the carbon content of the soil.
